Origin
Cliff May, born in San Diego with no formal architectural training, is widely credited as the creator of the modern California ranch house, having designed his first ranch-style home in 1932. May fused elements of Spanish Colonial Revival with California rancho adobe and Modernist principles, prioritising open plans and the integration of house and yard. He designed over a thousand custom residences and, from prototype designs, around eighteen thousand tract houses carried his imprint, cementing Ranch as a mass-built postwar typology.
